WA: All five detention centre escapees recaptured: Ruddock
CANBERRA, Dec 27 AAP - All five suspected illegal immigrants who escaped from a detention
centre in the north of Western Australia on Christmas Day had since been recaptured, the
government said today.
The five people had been picked up by WA police and were now in the police lock-up
in the Kimberley town of Derby, a spokesman for Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock said.
Two of the five were picked up within two hours of being reported missing from the
Curtin centre on Saturday night.
The pair were found wandering along the main road between the centre and Derby, 2,500
kilometres north of Perth.
Two of the three men who remained at large until this morning were believed to have
escaped previously from the centre.
He said the men were believed to be from the Middle East and were among about 1,000
suspected illegal immigrants being held there.
Security at the centre is to be reviewed in the light of the breakout.
